The first of its kind, we are proud to launch the ZS Maxillofacial Trauma Scoring System app, an exciting innovation in the world of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery designed to assist medics and dentists in assessing and managing facial fractures.

A true revolution in the field of facial trauma, this app allows clinicians or like-minded professionals to select individual bones of the facial skeleton and select a fracture pattern based on what they may find on clinical examination and X-Ray/CT image interpretation.

The end result is the production of the ZS Score which is a numerical summation of the individual weights assigned to the different fracture patterns selected across the craniofacial skeleton.

The final ZS Score can then be used as a means to rapidly calculate trauma severity, triage patients and plan for complex surgical cases.

Within the app, users can also annotate their findings by adding a free text note detailing crucial information such as mechanism of trauma and GCS. This can then be published as a full PDF report through the app and emailed to other clinicians or printed using AirPrint technology.

Features include:

- A colour coded diagrammatic representation of the full facial skeleton where users can select any of the bones (including teeth) and fracture severity
- Live updates on the most recent fracture selected
- Pinch to Zoom functionality
- Ability to add free text notes
- Automated text summaries of all the fractures selected
- Production of PDF summary reports displaying the ZS facial skeleton, numerical score values, automated text descriptions and free text.
- Ability to email and print summary reports directly within app

About Us:

This app was based on the work of two authors, Simon Holmes (Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Barts Health NHS Trust) and Zeeshan Ahmad (Junior Doctor, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde) who published their original paper in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in September 2012.

Simon Holmes now sits as the national lead for the trauma special interest group within the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in the United Kingdom and is also an editorial board member for our national journal.

Both authors have worked closely together over the last three years in order to bring their vision to reality of creating a universally accepted maxillofacial injury scoring system accessible to all.

We aim to roll out more apps over the coming year, and will be focussing on trauma associated with the base of the skull, post-operative patient outcomes and soft tissue injuries. We value your feedback and suggestions and welcome any donations via our email address: [email protected]
